Susan Gradwell

Paintings and etchings inspired by buried relics from archaeological finds, with a contemporary twist.

It is the idea of discovery of surviving traces and remains of lost, decayed, buried artefacts from archaeological explorations that continually influences her.

Her inspiration is also drawn from a love of timeless shapes and forms and the decorative qualities of their pattern and ornament.

One of the etching techniques she uses is known as Chine Collé; this involves printing over an extra layer between the water colour paper and the inked up plate. This can be gold leaf, metal leaf or tissue paper, for example. Because of this, none of the prints in an edition are absolutely identical.

After studying at St Martin's School of Art (BA) and the Central School of Art (MA), Susan worked in London, before moving to the West Country, where she continues to live and work.

She is also a member of the Bath Society of Artists, Spike Print Studio, Bath Artist Printmakers and Artists 303.
