Trained originally as a painter, I started exploring and experimenting in printmaking twenty years ago. I now work as a contemporary painter-printmaker finding the two disciplines complement each other. Painterly methods of printmaking interest me most. I make aluminium etchings and monotypes. I use mixed-media techniques in my paintings.
Drawing is the starting point for all my work, though a few lines may all that are sketched. In the initial stages I work very fast to record the dynamic rhythms and organic forms that capture my interest. The Somerset landscape is an abiding inspiration. Memory and time slowly transform the original stimulus.
In the studio the process of painting and printmaking take over and further change, both accidental and deliberate, happens. Composition and colour control the final result which can move from figurative to abstract. My work is instinctive rather than deliberate and I follow where it leads me. My present preoccupation is to do with creating space in my work
